Light up for Matariki! Ōwhiro Bay Residents Association (OBRA) needs your help to celebrate Matariki 2024.
If you live in Ōwhiro Bay (with an emphasis on the Parade) OBRA would love your help to make Matariki 2024 special.
We are asking residents to pop up lights outside or in your windows for the week leading up Matariki, Monday 24 to Monday 1 July.
We don't want you to go out and buy anything new - with sustainability in mind, please reuse old Christmas lights etc.
On Friday 28 June the community will be invited to walk the parade in the early evening to check out the light displays, followed by hot chocolate at the visitor centre between 5.30pm to 7pm.
If you/your house is interested in helping us "Light up for Matariki" by lighting up your home or by volunteering on the day please let us know by emailing: [email protected].
Keep any eye out for our future event updates by subscribing to the newsletter (drop us an email to subscribe)
Another date for your calendar - 29 June
As a sneak peak.... weather permitting, we will be having our mid-winter Matariki Swim on the morning of Saturday 29 June. Time 10am. More details to come, save the date.

Resource Recovery Centre - Plan Shared, Site Not Suitable
At the Wellington City Council Long-Term Plan, Finance, and Performance Committee on 15 February 2024, Council passed a resolution to “remove the resource recovery hub and review the need for a new resource recovery hub in the next Long-Term Plan”.
Prior to the resolution to remove the recovery hub, officers had already commenced a feasibility assessment of a site on Happy Valley Road. This report has recently been received and concludes that the site is not suitable for a Resource Recovery Hub.
More info available in the report here.
“The preliminary assessments noted in this report have highlighted a number of challenges for the redevelopment of 221 and 223 Happy Valley Road. Each of these challenges are manageable in isolation but put together they have the potential to have significant impact on the complexity and cost of redeveloping 221 and 223 Happy Valley Road.
Due to these combined factors, it is not considered feasible to relocate the Tip Shop, a recycling drop-off, or a combined facility to 221 and 223 Happy Valley Road.”
