Ōwhiro Bay's Yearly Matariki Celebrations!

Light up for Matariki!  Ōwhiro Bay Residents Association (OBRA) needs your help to celebrate Matariki 2024.

If you live in Ōwhiro Bay (with an emphasis on the Parade) OBRA would love your help to make Matariki 2024 special.
We are asking residents to pop up lights outside or in your windows for the week leading up Matariki, Monday 24 to Monday 1 July.

We don't want you to go out and buy anything new - with sustainability in mind, please reuse old Christmas lights etc.

On Friday 28 June the community will be invited to walk the parade in the early evening to check out the light displays, followed by hot chocolate at the visitor centre between 5.30pm to 7pm.

If you/your house is interested in helping us "Light up for Matariki" by lighting up your home or by volunteering on the day please let us know by emailing: [email protected].

Keep any eye out for our future event updates by subscribing to the newsletter (drop us an email to subscribe)

Another date for your calendar - 29 June
As a sneak peak.... weather permitting, we will be having our mid-winter Matariki Swim on the morning of Saturday 29 June. Time 10am. More details to come, save the date.

Kōrero with Holden Hohaia. Nautilus Creative Space.  Sunday 26 June, 2022.

Holden is the Māori Partnerships general manager at Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research.

As part of our inaugural celebration of Matariki, we were privileged to have Holden kōrero with us at Nautilus (a full house!) about the history and relevance of Maori in the Ōwhiro Bay area.

It was fantastic to be a part of. If you weren't able to attend, we've made an audio recording here (below) for you to enjoy!

This year marks the first ‘offical’ public holiday for Matariki. It’s a time where all New Zealanders get together to celebrate remembrance, joy and peace, and to herald Te Mātahi o te Tau, the beginning of Māori New Year and the changing of the seasons.

The Ōwhiro Bay Residents Association would like to invite you to our inaugural celebration of Matariki in Owhiro Bay. We have a fun weekend of activity planned, starting with a night of music and celebration at Nautilus Creative Space on Friday 24th of June at 7.30pm.

Cost is $10 per adult and children are free. You can book tickets by emailing [email protected] or texting 027 784 7912.

This event has been made possible by the generous support of Chris Robinson and Will Cummings at Tommys Wellington.  We hope you will join us to share music, food and laughter under the Matariki sky!

From,
The OBRA Events Committee.
