Rain event report and recommendations welcomed

Ōwhiro Bay Residents Association welcomed the decision made today by Wellington City Council's City Strategy and Development Committee.

The Committee today considered the report into the 20 April Rain Event. Go to page 1881 to read the full report.

Please note there was a substantive amendment added to the report which included a range of initiatives designed to address the issues experienced in Newtown, Berhampore and Island Bay. We will share with you the full set of minutes when they are published.

The key decisions made that affect Ōwhiro Bay and the wider Ōwhiro Catchment are very much in alignment with the views expressed at the 8 July meeting for both a management and maintenance plan for the Ōwhiro Stream. The key decisions are:

  • Agrees that the Council progress a Council-led catchment-scale Local Climate Adaptation Process for the Ōwhiro Stream Catchment, to identify actions that could reduce future impacts and provide advice on implementation pathways, including where actions may need to be led or funded by other agencies. The findings will be used to inform Tiaki Wai's Catchment Management Planning, Council asset planning and the Local Climate Adaptation Programme (LCAP).

  • Agrees to include funding for a $250,000 per year targeted monitoring and maintenance programme for Ōwhiro Stream catchment as part of the Long-term Plan process. This programme would provide an interim response to issues identified through the April 2026 recovery process, while longer-term catchment planning is progressed.

We are grateful to our Southern Ward Councillors Laurie Foon and Nureddin Abduraham and Mayor Andrew Little for their support and commitment to this result. We think this is a significant win for the Ōwhiro Community and the wider catchment.
